There are many different diets out there which try to help people to lose their excess fat, these can be very difficult to follow as the whole reason we are over-weight is because of our love for food. The diets themselves normally recommend us to eat healthy but uninspiring foods. These diets have never really worked for me, mainly because I have possibly not got the right attitude but mainly because I find it hard to stick to them. </P><P>A month maybe, six months certainly not.<br />

In my opinion exercise is the best way to lose weight. Going to a gym is certainly not for everyone and is somewhere I feel out of place and exposed. I always feel that people are looking, talking and laughing at me behind my back. Maybe I am just too paranoid.<br />

I personally would recommend hiring a personal trainer. Now you might think that only the rich and famous could possibly do this but you would be wrong. </P><P>There are many personal fitness trainers who are either connected to a gym or who advertise locally in newspapers or magazines.<br />

These are specially trained people who are willing to come to your house to show you how to correctly exercise and they do not cost an arm and a leg.<br />

If you have attempted this route before but have had a negative experience do not despair. It may well be because you just did not hit it off with your personal trainer. I have been using a personal trainer for the last five months and only plumped for him after trying out four others first.<br />

My personal trainer is very good for me. He keeps me on my toes, is very good at making me continue to work hard when all I want to do is quit. He is also very fair and seems to understand how far to push me. </P><P>Together we have worked out and agreed a program which includes various goals for the future. He seems to also understand about the types of food which I should and should not be eating. I am happily still able to eat a lot of foods which I like and he has also introduced me to a number of other ideas which are healthy but also very tasty. <br />

Hiring a personal trainer was the best thing I have ever done with regards to losing weight and I would recommend it to other people. I have now lost the beer belly and still continue working hard, it is now more as a fitness thing rather than to lose even more weight.<br />

The trainer has even stated that I am likely to actually gain weight in the future as certain muscles grow. </P><P>I will not be fat though, I will be toned and a little but muscular. I look forward to the future and can also now for the first time in a number of years enjoy shopping for clothes.<br />

Choosing a diet that is right for you is a daunting task.  Every where you look there is a new fad diet or someone is gushing about how much weight they lost on a particular diet.  How can you choose the right diet for you?  Individual diet needs may require a diet that is tailored directly for you.  However, most of America is on a weight loss craze.  We as Americans are willing to try anything for weight loss. </P><P> The South Beach Diet is one of the more popular diets that many are using for their weight loss efforts.  For health purposes, we will explore the pros and cons the South Beach Diet.<br />

The South Beach Diet was created by the cardiologist, Dr. Agatston.  Originally Dr. Agatston created the South Beach Diet for his heart patients. </P><P> His aim was to improve the patient's heart health while helping the patient to lose significant amounts of weight.  Dr. Agatston states the South Beach Diet is not a low fat or low carb diet but focuses more on the right kinds of fats and carbs.  The South Beach Diet is based on the Glycemic Index.  The South Beach Diet also encourages the incorporation of healthy fats from monounsaturated sources like olive oil.<br />

What is the Glycemic Index?  Carbohydrates are ranked on a numerical index, the Glycemic Index, which is based on the carbohydrates rate of glycemic response. </P><P> Each carbohydrate is scaled between 0-100 on the Glycemic Index.  Carbohydrates with a higher value on the Glycemic Index create a rapid rise in blood sugar.  Glucose is used as a reference point on the Glycemic Index scale, with a value of 100.<br />

What is the difference between the South Beach Diet and the Atkins Diet?  The difference between these two diets is the type of fat.  The South Beach Diet recommends a diet low in saturated fats while emphasizing the monounsaturated fat.  The South Beach Diet does not look at the grams of a carb but more so the sugars within the carb. </P><P> The Atkins diet looks at carb grams instead of carb sugars.<br />

How does the South Beach Diet work?  The South Beach Diet is divided into three phases.  Phase I involves the restriction of most carbohydrates.  In theory, Phase I allows the body time to resolve any insulin resistance.  This phase is to be followed for 14 days.  Foods that are banned during this time period include sweets, cake, biscuits, ice cream, sugar, alcohol, pasta, fruit, milk, rice, bread, and potatoes. </P><P> You are allowed low GI vegetables like cabbage and broccoli during this phase but your focus will be on eating meats that are lean (chicken, fish), eggs, low-fat cheese, olive oil, and some nuts.<br />

Phase II requires the reintroduction of low Glycemic Index carbohydrates that include granary bread, wholegrain cereals, pasta, low fat milk, and most fruits.  You are to follow Phase II of the South Beach Diet until you reach your ideal weight.  Phase III allows the reintroduction of a wide variety of foods aimed at keeping your weight maintained.<br />

What are the pros of the South Beach Diet?  The South Beach Diet requires no limit on portion sizes.  You are allowed to eat until you satisfy your appetite.  This diet encourages you to eat three meals a day with snacks. </P><P> This diet recommends replacing saturated fats with foods that contain monounsaturated fats which makes the South Beach Diet heart healthy.  Also, the South Beach Diet requires you to decrease consumption of carbohydrate rich foods that are highly processed and contain few nutrients.<br />

What are the cons of the South Beach Diet?  Phase I of the South Beach Diet requires serious willpower because of the carbohydrate restriction.  During this time, you may feel weak and tired as the body adjusts to the change in your diet.  Also during this time you will not be eating the required amount of fruits and vegetables causing you to lack essential vitamins and minerals that are found in fruits and vegetables.  A few carbohydrate rich foods contain good sources of fiber, vitamins, and minerals which you will also be lacking at this time.<br />

Following a diet based on the Glycemic Index will help you lose weight. </P><P> During Phase I, you are expected a weight loss level of around 8-13 pounds.  Extreme weight loss is not healthy for the body, while 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week is more reasonable and healthier for the body.  However, not all foods with a high GI should be excluded.  The Glycemic Index of a meal can change considerably when certain foods are consumed together.  A diet that contains monounsaturated fats instead of saturated fats is conducive for heart health. </P><P> Expelling processed carbohydrates from one's diet is also beneficial for good health.<br />

Choosing a diet that is right for you is very difficult.  The diet that you choose should be a diet that you can consider following for the rest of your life, if you plan to maintain your weight loss.  If you choose to follow the South Beach Diet, you should incorporate a great liquid vitamin supplement to bridge the nutritional gap.  You need to realize that weight loss can be achieved without following a fad diet.  A diet that is well planned with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, low fat milk, and lean meats along with regular exercise will go further in health than any fad diet.<br />

In other words we need to better understand appetites.  There is a common thread that every overweight individual that I have ever met shares, including myself.  We all share an overwhelming appetite for food.On the contrary though, if a person is not overweight it does not mean that they do not have a driving appetite for food.  Some individuals that I know have a bigger appetite than me, but couldn't gain any weight if they wanted to. </P><P> They have an over active thyroid or metabolism that keeps them from gaining weight.Then there are those that eat to live.  I mean eating is almost a chore to them.  They only eat so their stomach will shut up.  I have a friend that is this way.  It is very hard for me to understand sometimes. </P><P> He almost gets frustrated at times because he has to stop what he is doing and eat.  It totally blows me away!I guess the majority of us those live to eat.  We can't wait for our next meal.  I say that this is a majority of us because the statistics prove it.  Almost 70% of Americans are either overweight or obese. </P><P> There will also be an expected 150,000-weight loss surgeries performed this year as well.The drug industry also understands this because they are making billions of dollars on diet pills.  A lot of these pills have are appetite suppressors.  The only problem is they affect the hypothalamus, which has adverse effects on the body.The other problem with appetite suppressors is they only affect our body's appetite.  I don't really know of any medication that can suppress our mental or emotional appetite to eat.  We mentally or emotionally crave foods that is why I said that most of us live to eat. </P><P> Again, the stats show that billions of dollars a year are spent on weight loss products and different diets, yet we keep getting heavier and heavier as Americans.So, back to why diets fail.  Diets fail because they usually involve us excluding a certain type of food, or a certain food group.  Such diets require the dieter to not eat this or not eat that anymore.  These diets fail because they require us to fight our appetites.Now, I am not saying we should give into our appetites.  What I am saying is that we are addicted to food. </P><P> This is the most severe addiction that I know of.  Think about it, if you are addicted to anything else such as drugs, alcohol, or sexual desires, if you can break the addiction, you can live without ever taking another shot, pill, snort, drink, or sexual act.  Now, when you are addicted to food, even if you were able to break the addiction, you would have to eat again.Picture an alcoholics that has broken their addiction to alcohol, they have to go to AA meetings, and they have to vow never to drink another alcoholic beverage again.  Since alcoholism is a disease they can never have another drink again for the rest of their lives.Obesity is a disease too; however, those who have this disease just can't stop eating.  We try to go on diets, and those diets always seem to fail as time passes. </P><P> All it takes is one bite of a dessert, or bread, or whatever we were not eating, and our appetite kicks back with 1000% vengeance.So, what do we have to do?  We have to make a lifestyle change.  We have to learn to eat well-balanced meals, we have to learn to control portions, and we have to exercise.  On top of that, if you are a praying person, prayer is always helpful, and I am not talking about asking God to bless the feast before your indulge yourself.. </P>]]></content:encoded>
