According to background information in the article, previous peer-reviewed study shows that successful dieters maintaining a 30 pound or greater weight loss usually follow their own individualized, primarily lower fat diet, not popular, low carb or commercial diets.John La Puma, M.D., from the Santa Barbara Institute for Medical Nutrition and Healthy Weight and colleagues studied data from 394 practicing physicians. About half (196 or 49%) had not recommended any diet to their patients in the past 5 years. Almost half of the physicians?44 percent (174)-- were overweight or obese.
More of the overweight physicians (94, 54 percent) recommended a popular diet than did healthy weight physicians (106, 48 percent).
Physicians who did recommend diets most often recommended Weight Watchers (37 percent, 148 recommendations), followed by Jenny Craig (13 percent, 52 recommendations), and Atkins (12 percent, 47 recommendations).
The study also found that 72 percent (126/174) of overweight physicians had not followed a diet themselves in 5 years. Of those who had, however, 9 percent had followed low carb and 9 percent had followed low fat diets. Dr. La Puma commented, "It's not enough for a few doctors to specialize in nutrition. A few words of encouragement about weight loss from any physician can be incredibly helpful to his or her patients." The authors write, "Physicians seldom prescribe diets, though when they do, there is discordance between their personal use of and patient recommendation for popular diets.
Physicians can and should begin to prescribe particular eating plans for their patients."http://www.nature.com/cgi-taf/DynaPage.taf?file=/ijo/journal/vaop/ncurrent/abs/0802840a.html&_UserReference=0A01016546B8631D89A570E4F4AF41953DAChttp://www.drjohnlapuma.com.
South Beach Diet - US vs. World
Diets concern especially Americans as they do have a "national weight problem". So it would only be natural that dieting issues be so over proportioned in the US. Also, "miracle diet recipes" are very popular and make way rapidly into people's minds. This also happened with the South Beach Diet ? the diet that will not only allow you get rid of a lot of weight rapidly without starving but will also help you improve your health condition.Being so popular, diets have even gained the power of influencing the food commerce and industry. If you wonder how, well, food producers that have been educated for a while to flexibly follow the demands of the market in order to be competitive, came out with their offer of diet-friendly product versions, attracting customers in their yard.It seems that in countries outside the US, although people have heard of the diet, generally they are not very anxious to give up their eating habits in favor of a not so very well studied diet.
Yet, Dr. Agatston's...

Why Diets Don't Work
One of the biggest scams ever successfully pulled on the American public is ? somewhat appropriately ? a 4-letter word. That word is, of course, Diet. By now you have seen advertisements for more diets than you can easily remember, and have also most likely seen an article or television show debunking some of those diets. Unfortunately, the art of shooting holes through the credibility of a diet plan is normally done by ANOTHER diet company, solely for the purpose of getting you to use their product instead. Well, this article has nothing to sell, nor really anything to gain, save the knowledge that hopefully the reader ? that's you ? will put down the Diet Madness Menu, and get a real world point of view on why diets don't work, and what you can do about it.
Eating, the Lost ArtIf you are considering a diet, or have in the past, your primary motivation was most likely to lose weight. What if I was to tell you that in order to lose weight, you actually need to eat MORE than you...

Research Findings Reveal Interesting Aspects of Gout
Gout is a type of rheumatoid arthritis that causes pain, swelling and inflammation of the joints. Statistics indicate that there are more than 3.5 million people in the United States confronted with gout, most of them developing the disease after the age of 50. Although gout can be developed by both men and women, it predominantly affects the male gender. For many years, gout sufferers have been advised to limit the intake of purines and proteins in their diet, by avoiding fatty meats, seafood and even some purine-rich vegetables. Dairy products have also been considered to influence the development of gout, but in the absence of any clinical evidence.
Until recently, these recommendations were based solely upon the theory that purine-rich foods and a high protein intake are directly related with the occurrence of gout, by increasing the blood levels of uric acid. In order to reveal conclusive evidence regarding the contribution of a purine and protein-rich diet...
